“Mantis steals the fire from Ostrich”
“One day, Mantis sneaked up on Ostrich while he was eating and Mantis saw that it was roasting food on the fire, something never to be seen by the old trickster. When Ostrich finished cooking he tucked the fire deep under the pit of his wing.
Mantis now realises the advantages of fire and wondered how he could get hold of it from Ostrich. He schemed for days as this vision of fire already made him think. He went to Ostrich and told it, “I found a tree with the most wonderful fruit, come with mean I will show it to you”, said the old tinderbox owner. Ostrich followed him to the tree and saw with his own eyes the tree with yellow wild plumbs. Ostrich grateful started eating away at once but Mantis said, ‘Pick your fruit with more care!, eat higher up!, tastiest are at the top!”
Ostrich did as Mantis said and went higher and higher but the old man just urged him to go higher and higher.
Ostrich reached out further, standing on it’s toes and spreading it’s wings to balance itself and at that moment the trickster grabbed some of the fire underneath Ostrich wing.
Before they say the great bird use to fly but after that day it never flew again out of fear of loosing the little fire it has left. Mantis was eventually consumed by his own fire and out of the ashes and bones arose 2 Mantis, one built slender and was tender to withdrawal and the other was bold and a extrovert.”
